How much corpus do you really need for retirement?
A simple way to estimate your retirement number, accounting for inflation and longevity.
Most people underestimate how much they need for retirement because they think in today's rupees. Here is a simple framework.
1. Start with your expenses
Estimate your current monthly household expenses, excluding EMIs and costs that will end before retirement.
2. Adjust for inflation
At 6% inflation, expenses double roughly every 12 years. ₹50,000 a month today becomes about ₹2.9 lakh a month in 30 years.
3. Plan for a long retirement
Plan for at least 25 to 30 years after retirement. A common rule of thumb is a corpus of 25 to 30 times your annual expenses at retirement.
4. Close the gap
Subtract what your current investments will grow to, and invest the difference through SIPs, ideally with an annual step-up.
